There are several ways the test can be done (see below). In barium x-rays, fluoroscopy allows the doctor to see the movement of the intestines. If you think you may be pregnant, please inform your doctor or the radiologist before your test.



* Be sure to ask your personal physician how you should adjust your medications on the day of the exam.

* If you are diabetic, you must review with your physician or nurse how to adjust your medications and diet for the day of the procedure.

Barium Swallow - No special preparation

Upper GI Series - The night before the test, you should have no food after the evening meal. You may have small drinks of water. Do not eat or drink anything the morning of the test.

Barium Enema* - Follow the 24-hour bowel prep.

Barium Enema with Air Contrast* - Follow 48-hour bowel prep in your enema package. Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before the test.

* You may experience some discomfort with this type of test. If you have concerns about this test, please talk with your doctor.



You will be asked to lie on a table or to stand against it. A camera which takes the video or picture will be placed above or in front of you. The Radiologist will move the camera over the part of your body to be imaged. X-Rays are used in Fluoroscopy. If you are or think you may be pregnant, you must tell your doctor who asked for the test and the Radiologist. After your test you may go back to normal activities right away. If you were given barium, please drink more water than usual. This will relieve any constipation resulting from this test. Also, if you have had barium with your test, your bowel movement may appear light-colored for several days.
